State Representative Joel Sheltrown (D-West Branch) hosted Catherine Laurion, Miss Michigan Teen USA in a visit to the State Capitol, this week. Miss Laurion, who plans to study politics when she enters college next year, has used her title to increase awareness on self-esteem, gun-violence, and drug issues among the state's youth.
Miss Laurion met with Governor Granholm to discuss issues she has worked on as Miss Michigan Teen USA 2005, and was introduced to Lieutenant Governor John Cherry.
Representative Sheltrown also introduced Miss Laurion on the House floor and in the Senate, recognizing her many achievements as a scholar, athlete, philanthropist, and youth advocate. In addition to her Miss Michigan Teen USA title, Miss Laurion has earned the honor of first runner-up in the 2005 Miss Teen USA competition, which was held in Baton Rouge, LA. on August 9th.
"This young lady is a proud example of Michigan's talented, ambitious youth. She is an inspiration to her peers, championing issues that have a direct effect on young people, such as self-esteem and youth empowerment, the tragic problem of gun-violence, and the devastation caused by drug abuse. With her positive attitude and drive, Miss Laurion will surely realize her future goals," Sheltrown said.
